Downgrade My Upgrade..

Vodafone called! It’s upgrade time..

Ordinarily, this would be really exciting. A new gadget is a new way of life, almost. It’s a new way to organise your friends, work, life and all that really important spaff. New sounds, operating system and apps – it’s a plethora of wonderment!

However, I’m struggling to get excited over this. I like my phone as it is. It does everything I need it to and more, with an upgrade I’m not sure how I would be upgrading, exactly. I’ll just be waving goodbye to my shiny black square and saying hello to an even shinier, blacker square. It’s rubbish.

As a child of the 90′s and being an adolescent of the 00′s, I more or less experienced the evolution of the mobile to what it is today. I remember when having 256 colours on your screen and polyphonic ring-tones out your speaker was WOWZERS. Changeable fascias so you could have an ever changing phone every week. Screw on aerials which flashed like a rescue flare when a text message was on it’s way. Devices which flipped, twisted and folded in all directions. It all happened!

These days we are in love with black & grey rectangles. There’s a lack of intrigue because they have become so predictable. They’re styled in the same vain as that ‘Contemporary Living‘ bullshit, where people want to live in glass boxes with pristine white furniture and grey stone flooring. When in fact what we really want is a log cabin, with a rip-roaring fireplace and fat shag-pile carpet. Sure, they’re styled as function over form but not all of us want that, damn it!

It’s all gone wrong. What I really want is a twisty phone with flashy bits, changeable covers and loads of pre-set polyphonics! So my aforementioned looming upgrade will be a technical downgrade, but I’m more than happy with that..
